In a perfect world, every place would get as many sunny days as Phoenix, Arizona. The problem I had on number 6 was the bunkers and this seemed to be the biggest difference with the TPC Scottsdale course compared to other courses I have played. I had a real problem with how deep they were so I knew I had to stay out of them for the rest of the game.

I actually managed to pull things together nicely (for me) and put together a string of 5’s but the best hole of the day was by far the 18th. This is a beautiful finishing Par 4 that starts with a carry over the water. You need about a 190 yard carry to clear the water and I hit my drive perfect, avoiding 2 of the dreaded bunkers on the other side of the water. I’ve never been known for my short game so I was happy with my second shot that landed safely just short of the green. Here’s where I usually gain a couple strokes but I pulled out a nice par with a short chip and an easy putt to finish.

At the end of the day, I was pleased to finish with a 103. Considering my 10 on number 6, I left knowing that I was within striking distance of breaking 100 which was where I usually shoot on an average day. Throw in the fact that I was using rental clubs and they had cold beer on a hot day, I can’t wait to go back and break 100.

The following year I watched the FBR Open from the comfort of my own home while the snow fell outside. As I watched Mickelson tee off on number 18 I thought of my shining moment where I pulled out the par and wondered how Phil would play the same hole. I can’t remember what Phil’s score was on 18 that day in 2004 but it was either a bogey or a double bogey so I had to smile to myself watching at home. Of course I don’t think I would have handled the pressure as well if I were there in the FBR Open but it was fun to play the same course as the best golfers in the world.

I can’t think of anything more repulsive than talking in close quarters with someone who has the breath of a dog’. Well actually, that’s not quite true. Have you ever been on a fresh date and found yourself spontaneously and passionately delving into a good night frenchie with your new love? Nothing wrong with a good night kiss under normal circumstances, but I was found myself in an unfortunate situation once where my new date, Belinda, had a mouth that reeked like a dead rat’s guts.

It was not only disturbing but frigging awkward too. I mean how do you stop kissing abruptly and make it look natural. I wanted to throw up so quickly that I faked a sneezing fit which excused the embrace and also masked my expression of disgust. She certainly needed to experiment with the bad breath cures available but I wasn’t going to be the one to bring up such a sensitive subject. I thought I’d leave that to a future sweetheart, but as for me, well, I was out of there for good.

Why is it then that some folks have stinking bad breath despite having a rigorous oral hygiene regime and a perfect mouthful of teeth? My brother is one of these unfortunates and has literally spent years looking for bad breath cures and remedies. It’s sad to watch as people approach him and then cringe with revulsion as he speaks.

If you’re married or have a live-in partner, you’ve surely caught a whiff of your spouse’s morning yawn. It’s no wonder the good night kiss is more common than the good morning peck. Oh well, at least there are bad breath cures and various bad breath treatment products around these days. With a little guidance from your local dentist and maybe a trip to the pharmacist, you can prevent that retched air from ruining your first impressions.

In my brother’s case it can only be controlled not cured, but he’ll settle for that. It actually got to be such an issue between him and his wife, Rebecca, that she told him to either find some bad breath cures to try or she’s off! Bit drastic, I thought, but it was obviously getting to her big time!

Anyway, here are a few basic known cures for bad breath. It all starts with good oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day and according to dentists, you should spend a minimum of 2 minutes on your pearly whites each session. Another thing, and maybe not such common knowledge, is that you should scrub that tongue too, as it’s the tongue where all the little bacteria reside as they cling to your taste buds. Tongue scrubbing is a great cure for bad breath but don’t thrust that toothbrush too far back or you’ll find yourself reaching from the pit of your stomach.

Flossing is grossly overlooked by many but once again, it’s highly recommended by dentists. It’s between the teeth and gums where plaque and tarter build-up and this can lead to gingivitis and the dreaded death breath if gone untreated. For best results flossing should be done on a daily basis, preferably last thing at night.

Finally, there’s the trusted mouth wash, but this is one of the temporary bad breath cures and should be used in addition to and not instead of the treatments mentioned above. Aside from good oral cleaning, there are a number of other bad breath cures to try, and if you’re anything like my brother, I’d advise you seek the help of a professional. When in downtown Columbus dog lovers will want to head for Goodale Park, at
Front Street and Goodale Boulevard, for a romp. The 35-acre greenspace, now
surrounded by high-rise sentinels, was pastoral open ground when Dr. Lincoln
Goodale donated the land in 1850. Goodale was the first person to practice
medicine in Columbus and the park was the town’s first. You will find plenty of
canine company, including organized doggie play groups, under the shade trees
and near the artificial lake.

For some of the best canine hiking anywhere when visiting Columbus, travel about
one hour southeast to Hocking Hills State Park. The tribes of the Wyandot, Delaware
and Shawnee knew the valley as “Hockhocking” for its bottle shape, created when
glacial ice plugged the Hocking River. The sandstone is of varying hardness that has
cracked and eroded into fascinating rock formations and caves. The state of Ohio
began preserving this unique natural area in 1924 with a purchase of 146 acres.

Dog-friendly Hocking Hills State Park is a superb destination for any dog, but is
especially delightful for the canine hiker who is a few hikes beyond those days of
the 10-mile treks. There are six distinct areas in the park - five for canine hiking:
no dogs are permitted in the Conkles Hollow state nature preserve in the center of
Hocking Hills.

The star of Hocking Hills is Old Man’s Cave tucked into a heavily wooded, twisting
ravine. The Old Man was Richard Rowe who moved to the area some time around
1796 to establish a trading post. Upon arriving in Hocking Hills he stayed and lived
out his life here, traveling with his two dogs in search of game. Rowe is buried
beneath the ledge of the main recess cave.

An easy, one-mile trail works its way into and around the primeval gorge; wooden
steps and bridges smooth the way. Your dog will enjoy a dip in Old Man’s Creek,
especially in the pool beneath the Upper Falls.

Additional attractions near Old Man’s Cave are Cedar Falls and Ash Cave. Both can
be accessed by car and a short walk from the parking lots. For heartier canine
visitors, a 6-mile trail connects all three natural attractions. There is more great
dog-paddling under Cedar Falls and nearby Rose Lake.

In the north sections of Hocking Hills the trails explore impressive cliff formations
on trails less than one mile long. The trails are wide and graded with easy footing
for your dog as you make your way from the rim to the floor at the Rock House and
Cantwell Cliffs. The Rock House is a perpendicular cliff that features hollowed-out
rooms at the bottom. At Cantwell Cliffs your dog will enjoy navigating through
separated pillars of sandstone that have left narrow openings with colorful names
like Fat Woman’s Squeeze.

You will find Hocking Hills State Park on Ohio SR 374 that connects all six areas of
Hocking Hills State Park, 10 miles west of Logan and US 33.
